Projects thread

I have a .22 calibre pcp set up next to an old pile of junk at my shop just for fun. Saltpetre pallets at the ready. Works a treat ;)

I love these old school front rear light cars, can be so much fun to drive if you don't mind sinking $$ into them without hope of return

I'm probably $30k into this project so far and I haven't even considered a paint job and body work (which it desperately needs).

Many years ago I was T-boned by a girl who ran a red light in one of these cars. It tore the discs and damaged nerves in my lower back and I've been living with chronic pain ever since. Before the accident, I had a dream to swap the Naturally Aspirated 80hp motor for the turbo motor out of a volvo 940 turbo. I was lucky to find another 360 in the same colour and began building my dreams. Except for the exhaust, every single part of this little weapon I've done myself... And I've done just about everything you could imagine.

It has about 200kw of tyre shredding power and weighs 1100kgs. My target is 250kw at the wheels and 450-500nm of torque when I'm finished. The power to weight ratio is what really makes her shine. It's hard to describe without experiencing it yourself but it really is something special... And it's about to get a whole lot better.

I hope you don't leave that red pocket rocket in a public car park do you? In my neck of the woods that thing would be stripped down for parts faster than a blink of an eye and the only evidence of its existence would be an oil stain it left.

Being a toy, I don't daily drive it and rarely park it anywhere. I do most of my driving after 11pm on weekdays because Canberra becomes a ghost town and it's like having your own private track. No shortage of large roundabouts here with plenty of space to work with.

You would be surprised mate. Rare spares markets are booming

Any classic Volvo enthusiast would froth over what I have under the hood. The motor I have is a direct fit for the 240,740 and 940 series Volvo, which covers around 28 years of production. I definitely have to keep an eye out for that lot 😆

^^^ 30k into that? Really. Wow

Yeah, and like 5,000 hours or more. And that's doing all the work myself!

I've never been big on spending money on paint and body work. It's all in the motor, gearbox, brakes and suspension. I've essentially over-engineered it to handle big power reliably. I could probably spend another $50k on it before it's truly complete.

I understand the passion you have for it. When I was a young fart I had a flat 500 1953 modle from memory with suicide doors.
It ran on an oily rag never missed a beat, and went anywhere on bush track and sand dunes . If it got stuck I'd just lift the front up and away it went again. I so miss that car now. :(

Dude! Breath relax and take time to meditate before you blow that 50k on that tin can .

Haha, yeah. I don't regret a cent so far but the line does need to be drawn somewhere.

There can be an almost spiritual connection between man and machine. Most are just that - "tin cans" - But others can establish a level of synchronicity and harmony with your soul.

My old man taught me to avoid getting behind Mexicans & Volvos. Good advice while still relevant, the dreaded white Camry is a far greater risk today.
