I just had an Electrical contractor come thru the house to check Lights & Power ( it's a rental & it's mandatory legislation for VIC )

I asked him about the job & he was ok to talk. So I asked ( politely ) what his hourly rate is ?

$120/Hr 😲 o_O 😲

I left work ( retail ) 5 + yrs ago to care for my mum ( breast cancer ) I thought my Rate at $28/Hr was ok. Nothing special but for retail was ok. I'm a fitter & turner by trade but medical issue forced me out of my trade, so eventually ended up in retail ( Bunnings Toolshop & Plumbing Dept due to my trade background )

When he said $120/Hr I was a bit stunned for a minute. Damn that's close to $250,000/yr 😲 good work if u can get it.

For an employee that's fantastic. But then again, they do deal with considerable risk throughout their career. In Victoria alone 3 electricians died last year.

Electrician was the 1'st person I saw die in front of me. I was working at an Aluminum Smelter. Few of us walking down a roadway. 2 Elect were pushing a scaffold down the roadway towards us, moving to the next part of their job.

The scaffold hit the overhead 220 Kva wires running into a section of the plant. Bang, small explosion, massive sparks on the junction of the wires on the nearest pole. Huge thumps as massive circuit breakers jumped out & tried to push back in. Tried 3 x & then everything shut down & went quiet,

The elect pulling the scaffold was blown away from the scaffold ( saved his life ) the elect pushing the scaffold fell onto it & died. Couldn't help him until clearance that the power was off. 10 minutes. Way to long. They tried resuscitation but no hope.

The elect that live had deep burn tracks down his arms, chest, abdomen, down the leg that was on the ground ( Other leg was up as he was taking a step ) I looked at him. He was unconscious. His boot was missing & all his toes were blown off. He foot was smoking like a piece of cooking meat & u could smell it. I still have that imprinted in my mind. Not something u forget.

The elect came back to the Plant about a year later to thank everyone the help on the day & had helped with donation to him & his family. To put it bluntly, he was Fucked up. Foot amputated at the ankle. Still had the burn victim bandages all over him. Cold barely use his arms 😔 but he was Alive.

Trades are predators. Raking it in and lying through their teeth to women etc , i just did a bunch of stuff for 80yo down the road for peanuts litterally to protect her from these dogs. The only trade i have used that wasnt a total dog was an electrician. $90 an hr, nothing special but not a scamming peice of shit. Im so dirty on trades , leveraged up f$%kwits sending their own communities flat broke, and they act like they are the underdogs. I have more respect for a meth head washing car windows than these slobs.

Sorry, bit of a sore point after watching someone pay 11k for 6hrs plumbing. Max 1k materials. Crimping 50mm copper so they know u cant hire tool from reeces so they prey on hardworking people. Slobs. No excavation or demolition. Maggots. So many are. Ive been burnt so hard by these types of pricks. Absolute predators. More than anything tradies and their apetite for debt and divorces has made housing unaffordable. They are reinforcimg the poverty gap and ensuring that only millionaires can live in their country.

Hi Sandy Gooch. My initial posting was about what I would call a " Public Tradesperson ", but my comment was about industrial trades. Having been an industrial tradesman for 30 + yrs I can tell u that there is a very ugly side to the trades.

It's generally unspoken, but death, maimed & injury is just part of the " Job ". The general public normally doesn't hear or see of the constant flow of death & injury cases within the " Trades ".

The reason that " Tradespeople " charge a premium is because of the costs & personal toll that is average across trades is SO MUCH higher than any " White Collar " job. I have many personal experiences of death, maimed & injured in my 30 + yrs in the trades.

I have never seen a comparable account of death & injury amongst white collar workers. I will be totally " politically incorrect " & tell u that the trades generally refer to white collar jobs as " the Ladies work ", soft, easy & way less dangerous.

To cut the bullshit, if u do even the easiest of research u will find that the hard & dangerous trades are still 95% + dominated by men. Not because women can't do the work, it's because women aren't that stupid to do such dangerous shit :ROFLMAO: men will, but they do ask for extra dollars to do it & die for it.

My son just got an apprenticeship with a plumber. The employees generally get paid $40-$50 per hour. The boss charges out at around $100 per hour.

With AI taking over all the knowledge based jobs (lawyers, GPs, office work ... etc) being at tradesman makes a lot more sense.

OH YEAH ! Anything hand skills is going to be great - big time.

No AI is going to crawl under a house, into a sewer drain or connect some stupid " DIY " toilet design. Hands on trades will be making a big come back that they deserve.

Mate, good on your son to get into a trade. From what I've seen, the trades are making big dollars as the " white collar " jobs are being smashed by AI or killed under regulation & insurance.

I wish ur son a bright future. Trades was the best choice I ever made.

😁

Bill rate <> earn rate
That was his earn rate.

They probably bill 4 hrs minimum for any Job/Billing.

I had a small Biz ( 1997 - 2007 ) & at that time it was $100/hr ( that was truck & 2 people )

Minimum for any job/call out was 4 hrs billing. That was a standard at that time.

It's not like he's actually earning $120 an hour, far from it, take out insurances, taxs/GST, vehicle and cost to set up, fuel, tools, super the list goes on. Add to that all their costs have increased like everyone, blame the deliberate inflation wiping out the middle class.
Times have changed, there's a shortage of QUALITY tradesmen, most aren't desperate for work as there is abundance available, don't like the cost don't accept the job, they'll just move on to the next one, yep it sucks.
The new generation want to sit in front of a computer and not get their hands dirty, it's only going to get worse from here.

Hi DJE,

maybe u missed the intent of my post. I asked directly, he's being paid $120/hr. I rent. The Landlords are probably billed a minimum ( as this is legislated requirement ) of 4 hrs - probably a bill of $480 for a compulsory regulated job.

Even if he's a contractor. I know this game. He has his own claims & write offs. All those thing, fuel, tools, insurance, etc are claimable.

I'm caring for my mum ( breast cancer ) I get a carer payment. Works out to $17.50/hr on 40 hour week. I'm sure that contractor takes home more than I do 😂 ( like he's on $120/hr - that's $250,00/ year - I'm on $ 36,000/year )

U said it ur self - that their cost has increased like everyone - I'm 1 of the everyone - my cost have increased just as much as his costs. I don't have any capacity to work more hrs like he probably has. My income is fixed.

Ohh, I agree. It's going to get a lot fucking worse from here.

You nailed it.

I have worked 3 sides of this fence.

Employee - Contractor - Business owner. Each has it's + & - but who writes the rules controls the game.

If u look back thru history u will find it's the Business owner that had the time & money to peruse Political Office.

It's the Politicians that write the rules that Govern all aspects of our lives. Take 1 guess who are the greatest beneficiaries of those rules ?

Business are always/will be the winners of the Political rule writing game.

Contractor have slid into a space between employee & business. They do better than employees but are still constrained by Business Over reach.

Sounds like you're putting all trades and tradies in the same tainted basket.
Maybe you should have said "some tradies" are predators.
Just like "some" lawyers, real estate agents, mechanics, surveyors, chiropractors, physiotherapists the list goes on and on, there's predators in every sector in this toxic society.
