Mate, although u are totally in the right & should have received an apology from the police for their clearly wrongful actions, if u push something like this u go onto a concealed " Black List ". ( I was friendly with a local cop for a while & he quietly said that " Yes " they target people that they consider a " Problem ", unofficially of course )Not that long ago I was towing an enclosed trailer coming home from a gig late at night. As I was coming up to a T intersection there was a guy standing on the corner at the traffic light looking suspicious. He looked like he was going to jump out in from of my ute at 80kmph, so I slowed down in case he was crazy enough to do it. Turns out it was a cop who threw out spike strips in front of me. Because I was already slowing down, I managed to stop before them. His claim was that my trailer was reported as stolen. The police made no attempt to pull me over at all, instead they set-up and deployed stop sticks without any engagement. Fortunately, I was cautious enough to prevent damage but it could've been pretty bad towing a trailer and having all my tyres blown out.
Anyway, they read my number plates wrong, and instead of running them again through their system or attempting to pull me over, they decided to go full retard on me and deploy stop sticks. Obviously I wasn't too impressed, and when I asked for them to apologise for failing me in their duties they adamantly refused. Instead, I got a retaliatory breath test and inspection of my vehicles road worthiness in an attempt to defect me.
I thought about harnessing my inner Karen and filing a complaint to have them investigated, but as you clearly pointed out, the police rarely have any consequences.
U will be marked as will ur rego. Whenever u are then spotted by the police they will harass u & find any minor reason possible to penalize u. I know that this is wrong & people say u should stand up for ur rights, but if u don't have Very Deep Pockets they have the resources to eventually bring u down.
I have seen shit like this go down. I grew up in a small rural town & if u crossed the cops, they would make ur life a misery. On the flip side, a local shop owner, who's very friendly ( drinking buddies ) with the local cop, suffers a shop fire, that destroys the building. Local cop ruled it a " spontaneous combustion " in the stored flour. Big insurance payout & a brand new double shop rebuilt ( very lucrative )
As the saying goes :- " u have to know when to hold them & when to fold them ". U have to pick ur battles. Trying to battle the cops on the side of the road late at night, u can get urself into a real bad situation. Sometime " discretion is the better part of valor ", pick the battles that u can win.
