Venezuela declares state of emergency after US strikes

US President Donald Trump has confirmed a “large scale strike against Venezuela”.
“The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, captured and flown out of the Country,” Mr Trump wrote on Truth Social just after 8pm AEDT on Saturday. “This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement.”

He will hold a press conference at Mar-a-Lago at 11am local time (in the early hours of Sunday morning in Australia).
 
Suddenly, the Venezuelan Defense Minister, who had been written off by the media, made an appearance.The US attack on Venezuela is despicable and cowardly, and it threatens peace in the region, said Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López."In the face of this despicable and cowardly attack, which threatens peace and stability in the region, we express our strongest condemnation" he said in a video message.
 
Venezuela prosecutor accuses US of kidnapping Maduro Venezuela’s attorney general says the United States “kidnapped” President Nicolás Maduro during strikes that he says killed civilians, and called on the international community to condemn what he described as a cowardly attack.
“I call on the UN and international human rights organizations to condemn these cowardly attacks, which claimed innocent lives and resulted in the kidnapping of President Maduro,” he said on state television.
