You are probably right on this.
But there is a chance its some joker who planed the theft without thinking about the fence.
I know people who could process this but as soon as I started acquiring the equipment and chemicals to do so I would have gold stealing unit knocking on my door.
Best bet would be to bury it in backyard for a decade

I can tell u a little story about burying.

I worked at an Aluminum Smelter, part of the process was a cathode. It connected via a 2m 150mm square pure copper rod. ( expensive ) The end of the rods were corroded so they were sent for remelting into new rods. So a truck pulls up at the factory store. Confusion over paperwork. Rods have to go. Driver is late & behind schedule. So the truck is loaded with over 20 tons of pure copper.

Truck never went to refiner. Truck disappeared. End of story ? Not quite.

10 yrs later as a young union rep I sat back & heard the whisper of some " Copper ". Seems that said copper was buried on a farm a few Klm away & just waiting for the right time.

I'm not sure of the copper outcome. But I do know no one was ever even arrest over the theft of the copper, let alone convicted.
